What an opportunity I had!
I was asked to open for country group Montgomery Gentry!
The second to the last day of the Republican Convention (Wednesday) I got the final okay and was hired to open for the country group Montgomery Gentry for the Californian delegate's private party. This event was scheduled for Thursday evening starting at 10:00 p.m. and went until 2:30 a.m. Friday morning.
I was contacted one week prior to the event by a gentleman from Texas looking for a DJ to Open for the group and then play some music after the band had finished as the guests whined down for the night and leave the ball room. Originally the 70’s band “Kansas” was scheduled to play but then for some reason backed out at the last moment.
I sent the coordinator a specially prepared contract that had all the important details that he wanted as well as fit the situation (It wasn’t a wedding or corporate event) so my regular contracts just didn’t work.
The day before the event I still had not heard if I was hired or not. I called his phone and left a message asking how things were shaping up.
He text messaged me from the plane saying that he would be landing soon and that things were a go.
It was a very exciting evening. I was setting up my equipment on one stage as Montgomery Gentry was doing a sound check on the other stage. The best part was that I did not need to bring speakers or lights; it was all handled by/through the bands equipment. If I was a “Lap Top” DJ that would have been all I needed to bring in.
I started at 10:00 p.m. and was to play until the band started at 11:00 p.m. The band was to begin at 11:00 but because of the lateness of the speeches they didn’t start until about 12:15 a.m.
Originally Senator McCain was to appear and introduce the band but with everything running late, they shuffled him off to a plane and he went onto his next stop in Wisconsin.
The band was great to watch and very LOUD! My stage was stage left of the band and five feet from a huge stack of speakers. I was wearing ear plugs but it was still LOUD!
There was no assigned seating, no security separating the band from the guests, it was just open and free to move around as you wanted. Directly in front of the stage was the biggest dance floor I had ever seen. People were standing on it to watch the band and some were dancing.
It was great because no one there was being pushy or rude. Everyone was very polite! I wanted to get up in front of the stage to snap a picture and the people just opened an area and allowed me to do so and then I went back to my stage area.
The band finished up at about 1:45 a.m. so I started again. The room began to empty and I thought I was going to be done by 2:00 a.m. but just like a wedding suddenly at the end of the night people get up and want to dance. I finished up at 2:30 a.m.
With the help of my fellow DJ and good friend Karl Morgan, we broke down my equipment as the road crew for the band began to disassemble their set up. It was a real cool event to partake in and Karl was able to get some real good close up pictures of the band in action.
An opportunity like this doesn’t come alone often and I just couldn’t pass it up.
