DJ's advertising on E-Bay!

Is this the latest craze in advertising for Disc Jockeys?

I was on e-bay looking around for a few of my favorite things when I came across several Disc Jockeys who had advertisements on e-bay for their service.

It was amazing and actually shocking to see these ads. One guy was offering a 4 hour event anywhere in North or South America, Europe, Asia or Australia for only $365.00 His 6 hour package was only $450. The DJ is located in Connecticut so I’m guessing he must fly for free or tacks on a hefty charge for travel. (neither was mentioned in the ad) The best part was he listed it as $365.00 or BEST OFFER. Which means he could go out for much less!

To me this seems like a step towards desperation to post ads on e-bay. People, like me are shopping e-bay looking for incredible LOW priced deals on items, not for QUALITY entertainment for a Wedding.

Most of these ads boasted that they were “Professional” DJs with quality EQUIPMENT.

They must not of heard my seminar “To Be or Not To Be Professional” at the Northern DJ conference back in October 2006.

From what I could see most had one (equipment) or two of the 20 attributes I described that qualifies a person to use the word “Professional” in their ad description.

Maybe I’m completely wrong and advertising on E-bay is the wave of the future. Maybe we will all one day advertise on e-bay and again have to fight against the lowest priced guy who is willing to give away his time, talent and skills for pennies on the dollar instead of getting paid what we are worth, making a livable wage and sharing precious time with our friends and families.

Go to e-bay and type in Disc Jockeys, or DJ service or Wedding DJs. Each has different jockeys with their ads. I found a total of 8 advertising on e-bay when I looked.

Sound Technology of the Future part 4

It seems I just can't stop talking about my BOSE P.A.S. B1 l1 sound system.

I did a wedding where I and the dance floor were in a completely separate room from the dinning area. The bridal couple and I spoke about being in two separate rooms and the basic background/dinner music situation.

They were an older couple who did not want any background/dinner music because most of the guests were also older and they just wanted a nice, quiet dinner.

The room I was in was also used as the cocktail hour with drinks and snacks so I played the music as selected by the couple. When they moved into the other room down the hall one of the hotel staff managers came to me and gave me a "house" wireless microphone.

I asked him what he thought I needed this for and he told me for Dinner music in the other room. “All the DJs place the microphone in front of one of the speakers and use the "house" wireless microphone to transmit music to the other room.”

I couldn't help but give a little chuckle and say to him that I could not and would not do this. When he asked why I pointed to the BOSE towers and said, I have 28 speakers in each of the two towers, each speaker is for a separate frequency. Each tower divides the instruments used in the recording to a different one of the 28 speakers and then of course it also has four sub units that acts in the same way with the different bass tones.

"Which speaker frequency would you like to hear in the other room?"

Again he replied "all the other DJ's do it"

All the other DJ's are pushing the sound and all the frequencies through typically one speaker and horn and even with that, I would have to imagine the sound they are transmitting through your "house" speakers is less then adequate and well below the quality of sound I will produce with my BOSE system.

I did explain to him this couple did not wish to have any background/dinner music and have discussed this with me.

At the end of that night he came back up to me and really started asking questions about the BOSE system. He loved the sound and wanted a pair for his house!

The Night Before Christmas as read by Mark Ferrell

Here is a wonderful Christmas story for & about Disc Jockeys.

If you haven't already listened to "The Worth Show" episode #16 please take the 18 minutes to tune in and listen.

Mark Ferrell took the children’s story "The Night Before Christmas" and turned it into a story about us DJs.

It is very touching, humorous and insightful. If you listen to the story, I mean REALLY LISTEN to the story, it tells the truth and the problems all of us DJs face.

I would have to say, it answers the questions about what we should charge and why.

It is the "finale answer" to the question, what am I worth?

While you are taking in the story, listen to the craftsmanship and perfection in the way he wrote, reads and produces the story.

This is the type of excellence and service he provides to all his clients. Can you say that?
I can't, I wish I could, and I'm always trying harder, but truthfully I fall a little short.

To Mark Ferrell I say BRAVO! BRAVO! You are surely the best!
